Zu Leiming Met with Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization

On April 20, Mr. Zu Leiming, Vice Minister of Water Resourcesof China (MWR), met with Ms. Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization(WMO), in Beijing. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on strengthening cooperation.

Zu Leiming briefed the experience and progress achieved by MWR in advancing hydrological monitoring, forecasting and early warning under the guidance of President Xi Jinping’s water governanceprinciples of “prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches and promoting government-market synergy”. He also introduced the hydrological informationsharing in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin, as well as typhoon and rainstorm forecasting and early warningof the Mekong River carried out with the support of the World Meteorological Centre Beijing. He expressed the willingness of China to share technological advancements and practical experience with WMO, and to promote cooperation in personnel exchanges and capacity building, with a view to jointly enhancing global hydrological disaster early warningcapabilities.

Secretary-General Celeste Saulo highly commended China’s achievements in hydrological monitoring and early warning, as well as in Lancang-Mekong water resources cooperation. She noted that WMO sets great store by its partnership with China, and expressed readiness to work withMWR to deepen technical exchanges, personnel training, and joint standardformulation under the framework of the Early Warnings for All initiative, in order to jointly address water security challenges arising from global climate change.
