IV. Utilization and Protection of Water Resources
According to statistics, total water volume in 2005 was 2,743 billion m3, which is 13.7% more than that of the last year. Water availability per capita was 2,098 m3 that is 13.0% more than that of the last year. The mean annual precipitation was 628 mm, 4.6% more than that of last year. By the end of 2005, total water storage of 454 large reservoirs all over country was 222.7 billion m3, 28.3 billion m3 more than that of the last year.
Total water supply of water projects was 557.3 billion m3, in which surface water accounted for 81.3%, groundwater 18.3% and other water sources 0.4%. Water consumption nationwide was 557.3 billion m3, 0.5% more than that of the last year, among which domestic use was 47.37 billion m3 or 8.5% of the total, industrial use 502.13 billion m3 or 90.1%, and ecological and environmental use 7.8 billion m3 or 1.4%. In the industrial water use, the primary industry accounted for 65.0% of the total, the secondary industry 23.4%, and the tertiary industry 1.7%. Compared with last year, domestic water use increased by 6.9%, industrial use increased by 3.7% and agricultural use reduced by 1.6%. Water consumption per capita was 426 m3 and the same as that of the last year. Water use of 10,000 Yuan GDP (at current price) was 306 m3. According to the price of 2000, it was 348 m3, which is 12.8% less than that of the last year. Water use of industrial production value added per 10,000 Yuan was 168 m3.
According to water quality assessment result of 133,000 km rivers, rivers with water quality comply with or better than class-III accounted for 62.1% of the total, and same as last year. Water quality of rivers in 2005 was relatively better than that of the last year. Water pollution incident in the Songhua River Basin was positively coped with and effectively prevented.
Water resources allocation and emergency water supply. Water resource allocation measures in the Yellow River Basin, the Tarim River Basin and the Heihe River Basin were continued for an optimized utilization of water resources. Emergency water diversions were conducted including water transfer from the Yellow River to Tianjin, from the Yangtze River to the Taihu Lake, Pearl River Water Diversion for desalting water, Beijing water diversion from Cetian Reservoir and others, as well as secure water supply to important cities and ecological environment improvement.
