Liu Dongshun met with Brazilian Minister of Integration and Regional Development

On August 11, Mr. Liu Dongshun, Vice Minister of Water Resources of China, met with Mr. Waldez Góes, Brazilian Minister of Integration and Regional Development, in Beijing. Both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on China-Brazil cooperation in water sector. Mr. Marcos Galvao, Brazilian Ambassador to China, attended the meeting.

Vice Minister Liu briefed the historic achievements and transformations in China’s water sector under the guidance of President Xi Jinping’s water governance principles of “prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches and promoting government-market synergy”. He highlighted that Ministry of Water Resources of China firmly carries out President Xi Jinping’s important instructions on flood control and drought relief by means of accelerating the improvements of river-basin flood control engineering system, rainwater monitoring and forecasting system, water and drought disaster prevention system, among others. Moreover, he stated that both China and Brazil are confronted with uneven temporal and spatial distribution of water resources, frequent occurrence of floods and droughts, and other similar challenges. Hence, China stands ready to enhance bilateral exchange and cooperation in water sector, so as to contribute efforts to the development of China-Brazil Community with a Shared Future.

Minister Waldez Góes noted that the Brazilian government attaches great importance to water resources protection and water disasters prevention. In recent years, endeavors have been spared to increase water infrastructure investment, optimize water resources allocation and tackle water and drought disasters. He further expressed his willingness to continuously gear up bilateral exchanges and cooperation in water sector, and push forward water cooperation to a new level.
