In order to take emergency measures for handling the barrier lake and damaged waterworks caused by the devastating earthquake in Yunnan Province, a meeting was held and chaired by Mr. Chen Lei-the Minister of Water Resources, to take quick response for disaster relief.
The working group led by Vice Minister Liu Ning arrived at Zhaotong this Monday and an investigation was conducted to the site on Tuesday.
As of 14:00 August 6, the accumulated water volume of the barrier lake had reached about 56 million cubic meters, and the water level increased to 1176.42 meters. The flow entering into the lake was 209 cubic meters per second and the flow discharging from the lake was 120 cubic meters per second.
Barrier lakes, formed by landslides blocking rivers, are a recurrent threat to the lives of victims and rescuers alike, which has attracted great attention from the ministry as well as leaders of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. The working group will work closely with the local authorities, and find out options for disaster relief based on investigation and evaluation. Hydrological data at the site is now reported at 1-hour interval.
