Located in Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Baise Hydraulic Complex is a large-scale multipurpose water project in the You River, a tributary of the Pearl River. Aside from its main function of flood control, the project also brings about such supplementary benefits as power generation, irrigation, navigation, water supply, etc. The project is regarded as a backbone water project for the governance of the You River in line with the Comprehensive Development Planning of the Pearl River Basin. Moreover,it is one of the landmark projects in China’s Western Development Scheme. In 2021, it was awarded the Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize.

With a total investment of 6 billion Yuan, the construction of Baise Hydraulic Complex commenced in October 2001 and continued until its full commission in October 2006. The main structures consist of a dam,an underground powerhouse, navigation buildings, etc. The dam is a roller compacted concrete one with a height of 130 m, a length of 720 m and a width of 10 m. The normal water level of the reservoir stands at 228 m and its total storage capacity hits 4.8 billion m3. Besides, it boasts of a total installed capacity of 540,000 kW and an average annual power generation of 1.701 billion kWh.

Baise Hydraulic Complex plays an indispensable role in guaranteeing water quality, water supply and electricity for industrial and agricultural production and people’s livelihood in the downstream. By June 2021, the flood control benefits have added up to 7 billion Yuan and its output of power generation has reached over 20.5 billion kWh. In addition, Baise Hydraulic Complex has made important contribution to raising the flood control standard of Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and promoting the sustainable social and economic development of Guangxi and Yunnan.
