Wudongde Hydropower Station

As a national key project in China’s west-to-east power transmission program, Wudongde Hydropower Station, straddling Luquan county, Yunnan province, and Huidong county, Sichuan province, is the first among the four cascade hydropower stations (Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba) in the lower reaches of Jinsha River. Equipped with 12 hydro-turbines with a single unit capacity of 850,000 kW, Wudongde Hydropower Station has a gross installed capacity of 10.2 million kW, ranking the 7th in the world. Currently, it enjoys the largest capacity of single unit in operation in the world, and it is also the 4th in China and the 7th in the world that joins the club of mega hydropower stations with over 10 million kilowatts installed capacity.

Wudongde Hydropower Station is composed of main structures for water retaining, water releasing, water diversion and power generation, etc. The water retaining structure is a concrete double-curved arch dam, with the crest elevation of 988 m, the maximum dam height of 270m and the bottom thickness of 51m. Its thickness-height ratio is 0.19, ranking the project as the world's thinnest among arch dams above 300 meters in height. Besides, it is the first-ever super-high arch dam poured with low-heat cement concrete throughout the whole dam body in the world. The total storage capacity of Wudongde Reservoir stands at 7.408 billion m3, with the regulated storage capacity of 3 billion m3 and the flood control capacity of 2.44 billion m3. Its powerhouses are built in the mountains on both banks, with 6 mixed-flow hydro-turbine generating units installed on each side. The designed annual power generation is 38.91 billion kWh, and the daily power generation will cater for an annual power consumption by 300,000 people.

 

Wudongde Hydropower Station under construction

On December 24, 2015, the construction of Wudongde Hydropower Station was kicked off. On March 16, 2017, the concrete pouring of the dam commenced. On June 29, 2020, the first batch of units came into operation. On June 16, 2021, all units were put into use. At present, Wudongde Hydropower Station has fully reached the level of 945-meter water storage.

The four hydropower stations (Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba) in the lower reaches of Jinsha River have a combined storage capacity of 45.868 billion m3 and a flood control capacity of 15.493 billion m3. Being a vital component of the flood control system of Yangtze River, they will further step up the flood control capacity of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces.

Wudongde Hydropower Station is a significant cascade project in the development of the Jinsha River basin, with the main function of power generation and the supplementary benefits of flood control, navigation and sediment retaining. Hence, it creates favorable conditions for power generation and economic benefits of downstream hydropower stations, and promotes local poverty alleviation, contributing to local economic and social development.
